EXPERT ADVICE

SISLEY, NY
Absolute Slimming Body Treatment

This particular treatment is one of my favorites. It focuses on targeted areas with vigorous movements so it can stimulate and penetrate deeper on the fasciae. It’s designed to focus on legs and abdominals to decrease the appearance of cellulite, to smooth out the body, and to reduce the water retention. Our product, Cellulinov, is an intensive anti-cellulite body cream that works very well together with the strokes of the treatment, and fights against appearance of orange peel skin. I personally encourage our guests to book this treatment and to purchase the product especially during spring and summer, so they are fully prepared for the hot season.

3 Ways the Holidays Can Wreck Havoc on Your Skin (…and What You Can Do About It.)

The holidays are a great time to enjoy the company of friends and family and indulge in delicious foods. That said, the festive season can also have a tremendous effect on the skin—and not in a good way. Here are some of the ways the holidays can wreak havoc on your complexion.

  1. Lack of sleep deprives your skin the chance to repair itself.

Between food prep and party hosting, getting a good night’s sleep around the holidays can be quite the challenge. Our brains have a system—the lymphatic system—that flushes out neurotoxins. This is turned on mainly during sleep, But, it’s not just that. Our brains also produce body-repairing hormones when we sleep, such as growth hormones, which are necessary for tissue repair and cell regeneration, as well as myelin, the sheath that surrounds and insulates the nerves. Constantly depriving yourself of sleep also causes an elevation of cortisol, putting your body in a constant state of stress. As the body’s largest organ, skin is usually where the first signs of damage appear, and we’re not just talking about dark circles and under eye bags. Ideally, 7 to 8 hours of sleep is optimum because that’s when the skin repairs itself.

SKIN TIP #1: Calming aromatherapy sprays, such as lavender and chamomile, on your sheets or pillow will help you to relax and fall asleep faster.

  1. Sugary treats trigger glycation, which accelerates skin aging.

Let’s be honest, the best part about the holidays is all the delicious treats. Glycation is when sugar binds to other molecules in your body, such as protein and lipids. These sugar by-products do two things. First, they stop your cells from functioning properly, and then they create free radicals, which can further damage your cells. As a result, the molecules in your skin that keep your complexion looking tight and young—namely, collagen and elastin—are no longer able to do their jobs. Furthermore, you become more vulnerable to environmental stressors such as UV light, pollution and cigarette smoke.

SKIN TIP #2: If you’re having a hard time controlling your sweet tooth, opt for berries or dark chocolate. Both are high in antioxidants, and berries can protect your skin from environmental aggressors, aging, and more.

  1. Alcoholic drinks produce free radicals that damage skin.

In addition to sugary treats, the effects of alcohol from your holiday drinks on the skin can also be substantial. “Flushing” of the skin is due to accumulation of acetaldehyde (what alcohol gets broken down to) in the blood. Acetaldehyde is thought to cause flushing by stimulating the release of histamine. Acetaldehyde also produces reactive free radicals and damages DNA. This leads to the breakdown of collagen fibers, skin inflammation, skin hyperpigmentation, and can cause wrinkles.

SKIN TIP #3: Instead of a booze-filled holiday drink, opt for a wine spritzer… not to mention red wine is full of antioxidants.

ST. SOMEWHERE SPA

After a long summer and sun exposure, your face can result in clogged pores, dull dry skin and hyperpigmentation. Facials treatments can restore and repair your skin! It is highly recommended to incorporate vitamin C to your skincare regimen. It promotes collagen production which has the potential to thicken the dermis diminish fine-lines. In addition vitamin C is an antioxidant, meaning it protects skin cells from damaging free radicals caused by UV exposure.  It also inhibits melanin production in the skin, which can help lighten hyperpigmentation and even out skin tone, and enhance skin radiance. Finally, vitamin C helps repair damage from sun exposure and collagen loss by encouraging healthy cell turnover and regeneration. Explore Dr. Dennis Gross for all skincare needs and essentials!

RED ROCK SPA

Colder temperatures and dry air are a recipe for dry, itchy, red skin.  Keep your skin moisturized and happy all winter long with these tips:

Cleanse your skin gently, without stripping skin of it’s natural oils.  I recommend Naturopathica’s Manuka Honey Cleansing Balm. This balm gently breaks down dirt, oil, and makeup and leaves your skin feeling clean, but hydrated.  Manuka Honey balances your skin’s microbiome and Royal Jelly Peptides accelerate skin renewal. I love using facial mists to add a boost of hydration to my skin when the weather gets cold and dry. For an added moisture boost, apply serums when skin is still a little damp – this locks in extra hydration.  My favorite winter go-to is Naturopathica’s Oat and Calendula Soothing Jelly Mist.  This mist calms and soothes redness and irritation and hyaluronic acid boosts hydration.

Dry, rough skin is inevitable and exfoliation is even more important in winter months to help smooth and refine skin.  I like to switch to a gentle polish in the winter, like Lancer Method Polish.  The quartz crystals in the polish buff away any dry and flaky skin and leave skin feeling smoother. Moisturize frequently, and don’t forget your hands! Switch up your skin care routine with the seasons. This may mean switching from a facial lotion to a cream or even a facial oil during drier winter months.  Lancer Omega Hydrating Oil is a lightweight oil that absorbs quickly into the skin, so it won’t feel heavy or greasy.  It’s packed with essential fatty acids to nourish the skin and improve skin texture.

Naturopathica’s Gotu Kola Intense Repair Balm is made for combating dry, itchy skin. It drenches the skin in rich hydrators, it repair damage to dry, cracked skin, and it plumps and firms.  The best part is this balm can be used on the face or body! For dry, rough skin on your body, a gentle and hydrating body polish and moisturizing cleanser will chase away itchy skin. Lalicious Sugar Scrub has pure cane sugar to polish skin and coconut and almond oils create a rich, whipped texture that leaves skin feeling extra moisturized. The Lalicious Shower Oils are a great way to gently cleanser skin and hydrate at the same time.

SISLEY, MDR

Anyone who is experiencing muscle tension, pain, insomnia, or stress may benefit from a hot stone massage. Incorporating the Hot Stone enhancement to any of Sisley’s Signature massage, not only promotes relaxation, but it also helps to relieve body aches by soothing painful muscles. The heat will help increase blood flow to the affected area and throughout the body, decrease joint stiffness, relieve muscle spasms, and increase range of motion. A little heat goes a long way!

– Tida Howard, Massage Therapist

WELL & BEING, ESJ

In order to avoid painful knots and muscular spasms, and to obtain a great quality of life and well-being, a monthly therapeutic massage accompanied by a healthy lifestyle combined with exercise is recommended.
